Club Death Photo Essay
I was asked by a close friend to contribute work for her blog about Indiana and how it is sexy. My first reaction was, “Why in the hell is she asking me to contribute to a blog about this topic? I hate living in Indiana. All I could think of was that the only positive thing about where I live in Indiana is that it’s close to Chicago.
Most of the things I have found sexy in Indiana have nothing to do with the outdoors. I don’t like fishing, camping, swimming, skiing, hiking, and I hate sports. Therefore, Indiana just didn’t have much to offer me growing up. Although I was raised in Indiana, I was born in Cincinnati and was adopted at birth by my parents who lived in South Bend. So, the combination of being interested in things that could not be found in Indiana, and the displacement feelings that come with adoption, I found solace hanging out at the record store all day, or going to Nite Lites will all my friends to dance to Depeche Mode and The Cure.
I then began thinking to myself about what type of things I found decadent or sexy growing up in South Bend, Indiana? The first things that came to mind were all the misfit kids I was friends with growing up and all the decadent fun that we tried to have by going to all these nightclubs that used to spring in Northern Indiana during the 1980s and 1990s. I then thought about what kind of state the old buildings that housed these clubs were in and the idea then popped in my head. “I just take an afternoon and get on my Vespa and ride around to all these old locations and photograph them.” I thought it would be interesting to find the beauty in the urban decay of these old spaces. Because even though they were closed, boarded up, or run down, they would always be beautiful to me because of the memories of things that happened in these spaces that changed my life. Therefore I think Indiana is sexy because it taught me to see the beauty in the obscure, the importance of the underdog, and the most important thing of all: to always be yourself. Now, that’s fucking Sexy to me!
